As dusk fell on the Central Park in Puerto Armuelles, across from the pier, March 18th, 2017, animal lovers from all around Puerto gathered to light candles, say prayers, and share support for the well-being of domestic and orphaned animals. Similar scenes happened in towns and cities throughout the country of Panama simultaneously. This candlelight vigil was organized to bring awareness against the mass poisonings of ‘street dogs’ and animal abuse. The countrywide event was organized by SPAY PANAMA in Panama City, with the support of it’s chapters and other spay/neuter and animal rescue groups throughout the country.
Voluntarios Por Los Animales (Puerto Armuelles Animal Volunteers) was proud to join in the cause.
There were about 25 people in attendance, along with their pets. Many of the attendees wore white and the pets were given scarves, blue for the boys and pink for the girls. There were mostly dogs and even a token cat ~ They all enjoyed meeting new friends!
Voluntarios Por Los Animales is a nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers. They rescue, feed, provide veterinary attention, and sterilization of stray animals in Puerto Armuelles and neighboring communities. Animales support other animal rescue groups in the Province of Chiriquí and promote the rights of animals, especially street orphans.
After dark, candles were lit and passed around. There were a few speeches and several prayers in support of the cause. Animales had items for sale to help raise funds, including hats, t-shirts, coffee mugs, stickers, and key chains. They also accept cash donations and welcome volunteers.
